Between Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15, 2018, the island of Kaua‘i was engulfed by an unprecedented 28 inches of rain in less than 24 hours.
Massive floods, landslides and sinkholes have so heavily altered the island that homes, communities and farmland are utterly unrecognizable. A portion of Kūhio Highway was destroyed, preventing access to the north side. Residents across the island have been displaced, and there continues to be more rain in the forecast. Hawai‘i State Governor David Ige and Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho have declared a state of emergency.
Many of our friends and ‘ohana — especially our local farmers — are underwater. Whether you're a local or you live on the mainland, you can have a direct impact on restoring the livelihoods of our local farmers, and by extension, our access to good, responsibly-grown food. We’re all in this together. Farmers, and the land they look after for us, are literally our food source. Whether it's your local farmer's market, favorite restaurants or go-to grocery store, our ability to feed our families depends on our daily support of Hawai‘i’s local farmers. Especially in a moment like this.
As chefs, as eaters, and as a national community, we must rise up and restore the livelihoods of Hawai‘i’s local farmers. Chefs across the nation have joined together in an effort to show our support for Hawaii’s farmers. From gathering supplies and hosting events to donating a portion of proceeds and providing on the ground assistance we are proud to stand with Kaua‘i.
